The climate
The estate, located between the Maipo River and the foothills of the Andes Mountains, benefits from one of Chile’s finest terroirs for wine production, thanks to the perfect balance of natural attributes: the Andes Mountains to the east, oceanic influences from the west, clean air, and vast open spaces. The region’s climate is heavily influenced by the mountains and its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, with hot, dry summers moderated by humid ocean breezes and cooler night temperatures. These significant day-to-night temperature swings, combined with an extended growing season, ensure a slow, ideal ripening phase and optimal development of the fruit’s aromatic compounds.
The vineyards
The estate extends over an area of 110 ha (272 acres) of which 90 ha (222 acres) are planted with red grape varieties. The vineyards grow at an altitude of 650 – 750 meters above sea level (2,133 – 2,460 feet) south of the Maipo River on the lower slopes of the foothills of the Andes. In the lower area, the soil is rich in clay while the upper area is rocky.
The varieties
Haras de Pirque’s vineyards are planted with international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – which have achieved a distinctive character and expression in this territory – and Carménère, Chile’s most representative grape variety. White grapes come from the coastal areas of Casablanca and Leyda, two regions that are ideal for growing Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
